I was the quiet one. If I brought up an idea and somebody shot it down, I went right back to my little safe place. It wasn't really safe. It was just familiar.
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, in a family that loved me and raised me to be a good government girl. Get the good job, keep the good job, don't rock the boat. I carried that with me to Washington and into a federal career that lasted 39 years.
Some of those years were pleasant. A lot of them felt like I needed one of those yellow hazmat suits just to get through the day. I'd been bullied in school, and then I was bullied at work, and somewhere along the way I believed the lie that this was simply what I had to put up with.
